Penllergare – Summer 2024 Welshie Walk

Unlike last time we were here, we had a beautiful sunny day for our Summer Get Together and Welshie Walk.

It was another successful meetup and Welshie Walk at Penllegare Valley Woodland on Sunday last.

Over 20 dogs dragged their owners along to walk around these lovely woodlands – it was a beautiful sunny day and most dogs found a drop of water to cool off in – and most owners found a nice cuppa in the brand new cafe afterwards.

We were pleased to say hello to some newcomers and especially to Amy who brought along her owners all the way from Holland who were on holiday here in the spiritual home of the Welsh Springer – hope you all have a safe journey home.

Many thanks once again to Stuart and the team of volunteers at Penllergare for making us welcome – I’m sure we’ll be back again in the winter for another cuppa and slice of Viccie Sponge.

It was a lovely walk around the woods and a pleasure to see it in its glorious summer colours – you can certainly see how much work all you volunteer gardeners put into the place – and we were very impressed with your new visitor centre and café. So we owe a big thank you to the volunteers who make it such a wonderful place to visit.

But what’s so special about Penllergare and Welsh springers?

You will see a carved statue of a Welsh Springer, named Llew, at the entrance to the woods – he’s there to commemorate the Llewelyn family who owned Penllergare in the 19th century and were instrumental in developing and getting the Welsh Springer Spaniel recognised as a unique breed by the Kennel Club. The estate was predominantly a woodcock shoot, a ground nesting bird that Welsh Springers are particularly adept at flushing.

Penllergare is also famous for its association with Fox Talbot, the pioneer of photography, who was a cousin of John Dillwyn Llewelyn’s wife Emma, and spent much of his time at Penllergare and inspired JDL’s own fascination in photography.

It’s a lovely place to visit – with or without dogs – and easy to find just off junction 47 of the M4 – check out their website. https://penllergare.org
